The Soul Stone

The talented James Ewing brings us the Soul Stone, an occult artifact owned by his ancestor Victor Ewing.  It's just one part of a multi-media project that includes a detailed diary and the objects associated with Victor's travels.

That’s a nice piece of work and the use of the stone is masterful. It’s always nice to see an item crafted of metal and stone. Ancient stones of power were often encased in reliquaries or settings like that and the mounts might be much newer than that stone itself.

The hexagram is an ancient symbol now commonly assocated with Kabalistic grimoires in prop making these days. But the hexagram also appears in Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish iconography as well as Islamic arts. The I Ching uses hexagram symbology, but not in the form of a star but as a set of symbols.

Amusingly enough, it was also the name of a periodical game catalogue issued by Gamescience (Lou Zocchi) in the 1970s called the Hex-o-gram, although it refers to a hexagon playing board rather than something esoteric outside of the gamming community. Then again, I guess it’s pretty obscure at that.
